On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

Jon StewartIn a wise move by the Academy, Jon Stewart, best known as ever-sardonic host of The Daily Show, has been passed the coveted torch once again and will host the 2008 Academy Awards.  If you remember, Stewart had hosting duties in 2006 and brought to the show his own irreverent humor and affability.

Of course, last year the hilarious Ellen DeGeneres led the show with confidence, but had more than a few awkward moments—I can only picture the ill-conceived bit with her vacuuming in the isles aisles.  Now I’m not saying Ellen didn’t hold her own, but as the show went on I longed for more improvisational humor and Hollywood ribbing than she could give.

Stewart’s particular brand of comedy tends to counter-balance the often arrogant and narcissistic side of Hollywood, walking the line between humorous and disrespectful with utmost precision.  In short, he’s perfect.  The 2008 Academy Awards will take place on February 24.

Jennifer Hudson is proving (to many jealous women out there) that her career did not peak with a silly little .  The winner has now been cast in the big screen version of .

The former contestant will be joining , Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis in the Big Apple.  After months of talk, production on the show-turned film will finally begin next week.

While plot details have yet been leaked, we do know that Jennifer will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant (Louise).  Any guesses out there as to what that means?  Did Carrie become a full-time writer at Vogue?  Does this mean she will actually be working outside of her apartment…in an office?

Yuma

Audiences went old-school this weekend helping 3:10 to Yuma corral the box office crown.  The well-received film, starring and , marked the second week in a row a classic movie remake landed at #1.  (Previous winner, Halloween slid down a notch this week).

Question now is:  Will the success of Yuma spur an onslaught of Westerns?  Given the lack of any real competition this weekend, it still may be too soon to say.  But any speculation will probably be confirmed when ‘s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford opens on September 21.

A trend that probably won’t be coming back anytime soon?  Brothers-desperately-trying-to-make-a-baby-to-make-their-father-happy-before-he-dies films.  The Brothers Solomon delivered a pathetic $525,000 in its debut weekend.  Granted, it didn’t show in many theaters (only 700)—but I’m guessing there was a reason for that.

Indiana JonesIn a truly auspicious moment at Sunday’s Video Music Awards, Shia LeBeouf announced the title of the upcoming fourth installment in the Indiana Jones series:

So I’ve been sworn to secrecy by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas not to tell you the title of the next Indiana Jones movie. What the hell, I’m 21 and we’re in Vegas, baby, so here it goes. The official title to the next Indiana Jones installment: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The much-anticipated film has already been filming for several months and will star Harrison Ford, Shia LeBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Jim Broadbent, John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Karen Allen.  It’s scheduled to open in theatres May 22, 2008.

Does anyone else think the title is a bit busy?  I mean, at least Raiders of the Lost Ark was officially titled as such, without the Indiana Jones and the at the beginning.  It could be worse, I suppose—how about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Shiny Crystal Skull or Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that Bites People.  Imagine if M. Night Shyamalan, once offered a chance to write the screenplay, had penned the script: Indiana Jones and the Amish Comic Book Alien in the Water that Sees Dead People.  Scary.  But I’d love to see the poster.

Oh well, I suppose the title has little to do with the content—let’s hope that the film supersedes its bloated moniker, hmm?

Jane WymanJane Wyman, whose acting credits include more than forty movies, a starring role on Falcon Crest, and several awards, passed away at age ninety-three on Monday. Though Wyman won an http://movies.gearlive.com/movies/article/the-2007-academy-awards-3252007445/ Academy Award and enjoyed a lengthy Hollywood career, she is perhaps best known for being the first wife of actor-turned-politician Ronald Reagan. She passed away at her home in Palm Springs. The Wyman-Reagan marriage ended the same year the actress won the Oscar for her role in Johnny Belinda, and Jane remained close-mouthed to the press after Reagan became the President. She told reporters it was bad taste to talk about ex-husbands and wives, and at Reagan’s passing in 2004 said he was a “great, kind and gentle man.” Together, the couple had three children – one that did not survive, and one they jointly adopted. Wyman retreated from the public view after her nearly decade-long stint with Falcon Crest was over, putting a cap on her forty years in the entertainment industry.

Lindsay Lohan  Hollywood and the media glorify scandal – the worse the celebs look in the pictures, the better. But at what point does the industry throw up its hands and say “enough is enough, already?” Insiders are already speculating that , former Disney child actress-turned sultry party girl, has seen the last of her big screen days…at least as far as A-list movies are concerned. The poster for I Know Who Killed Me, a movie that appeared on the scene just as the news broke that Lindsay was arrested, didn’t even feature Lohan’s image. Now, another Lohan movie – Georgia Rule – is out on DVD. The commercials don’t feature much of Lohan, a clear ploy by the advertisers to distance themselves from the turbulent young star. Lindsay is currently appearing on the cover of Maxim magazine, however, wearing a bedroom expression and not much else, showing that at least some aspects of Lohan’s star continue to shine. Stars like (who struggled with her own drug problems) managed to come back from the brink of Hollywood blacklisting, while other substance-abusing stars (like , who disappeared into complete obscurity before reality TV saved him from complete anonymity) were kicked quickly to the curb and off the red carpet. Will Lohan manage to re-establish her screen success, or will we see her in ten years on a little-known cable TV program, struggling to find some sort of fame once more?
